Dandelion is an independent magazine and creative platform dedicated to amplifying the ideas, experiences, and artistic work of young people and those at the beginning of their careers in horticulture, gardening, and land-based practice. Positioned at the meeting point of making, thinking, and creativity, the publication creates space for voices that are often underrepresented within the sector.
Although horticulture and landscape work are rich in tradition and expertise, opportunities for students, apprentices, and early-career practitioners to share their perspectives in meaningful ways can be limited. Dandelion seeks to address this by offering a platform where emerging contributors can reflect on their experiences, experiment creatively, and contribute to wider conversations about land, ecology, and working landscapes.
The magazine takes an expansive approach to expression, welcoming writing, photography, visual art, and interdisciplinary work. Its aim is not only to document contemporary horticulture and land-based practice, but also to explore the emotional, cultural, and environmental dimensions that shape how people relate to the land.
This is not an exclusive space; however, certain voices will be prioritised. As a guide, Dandelion particularly welcomes contributions from young people under 35 years old and from those in the first five years of their careers or land-based learning journeys. You do not need to be part of a professional industry to take part—anyone actively engaged in horticulture and land work is encouraged to get involved, from volunteers and hobbyists to students and those seeking to build livelihoods through nature.
Submissions are now open for the first themed issue, Humus. Drawing on both the literal and symbolic meanings of the word, the theme invites responses to soil, decay, regeneration, memory, connection, and the physical and cultural foundations on which landscapes are formed. Contributions are encouraged from across the sector, particularly from students, trainees, and early-career practitioners with fresh perspectives to share.

By amplifying new voices and creative approaches, Dandelion aims to help cultivate a more inclusive, reflective, and imaginative future for horticulture and land-based practice—one grounded in the realities of working with the land and inspired by those who will shape it next.
