Horticulture or Landscaping Supervisor

The Horticulture or Landscaping Supervisor apprenticeship (Level 3) is designed to develop specialist supervisory skills in managing horticultural and landscaping operations.

It’s targeted at individuals who already have experience in horticulture or landscaping and are looking to transition into leadership roles. Supervisors trained under this standard plan oversee and carry out a mix of soft and hard landscaping activities, ensuring that work aligns with design, quality, and sustainability standards.

  • Ability to plan and schedule horticultural and landscaping operations, including resource allocation, materials, and sequencing of work.
  • Supervisory competence in both soft landscaping (plants, soil, planting, maintenance) and hard landscaping (pathways, structures, features).
  • Technical knowledge in plant growth, soil science, pest/disease/weed control, propagation, pruning, and plant nutrition.
  • Skills in interpreting drawings, measuring and setting out sites, supervising installation of hardscape elements (e.g. paving, walls, decking), and supervising maintenance of softscape.
  • Knowledge of health & safety, environmental practices, sustainable methods, risk assessment, and relevant regulations (e.g. pesticide usage, competence certifications).
  • Leadership and people skills: managing teams, monitoring quality, communicating with stakeholders, and resolving issues on site.

Time / Workload

  • Typical duration: 36 months (3 years)
  • Venue / learning model: the training is primarily workplace-based with off-the-job training (structured learning, mentoring, workshops) to meet the KSBs.
  • Apprentices must have completed at least 12 months of training before attending EPA and submit a portfolio of evidence.

What It Can Lead To

  • The L2 Apprenticeship can lead to the L3 Apprenticeship
  • Supervisory and leadership roles in horticulture or landscaping, such as Landscape Supervisor, Horticultural Supervisor, Team Leader, or Deputy Head Gardener.
  • Working for parks & gardens, estates, local authorities, commercial landscaping firms, botanical gardens, historic gardens, landscapers and grounds maintenance businesses.

  • Greater responsibility, oversight, and pay uplift compared to operative/junior roles.

Conclusion

The Horticulture or Landscaping Supervisor Apprenticeship provides a pathway for experienced practitioners to transition into leadership within the green space industry.
