What do Head Gardener do?

Head Gardeners supervise teams of gardeners who grow and look after plants in public parks, private and botanical gardens, plant nurseries, sports facilities, roadside verges and open green spaces.

They are responsible for the maintenance and development of grounds and gardens, working for local authorities, private owners or sports facility management, within agreed budgets.

They also develop and implement new planting schemes and pruning and trimming as required.

They are often responsible for propagation programmes under glass or in greenhouses. Head gardeners will most likely be responsible for a team of gardeners including volunteers.
